Anxiety is the basic biological driving force and the natural response to threat or danger, which may be real or perceived, it is unpleasant but necessary and is accompanied by certain physiological responses, mainly hormonal, which, while helping to cope with danger, also produce, to a varying degree, the symptoms associated with anxiety.
Anxiety often occurs in the absence of an obvious cause and severe anxiety of this kind is abnormal and often disabling. Such pathological anxiety is one of the commonest forms of psychiatric disorder. There are different types of anxiety disorders such as; free-floating anxiety (anxiety states or anxiety neuroses), hypochondriasis (psychosomatic disorder) and situational anxiety (phobias).
Anxiety may also be a symptom of various other disorders including hyperthyroidism, menopausal hormonal disturbances, drug withdrawal, schizophrenia, depressive illness, post-concussional syndrome and dementia, resulting from any organic disease such as atherosclerosis.
The symptoms of pathological anxiety include a rapid pulse, breathlessness, tremulousness, a dry mouth, a feeling of tightness in the chest, sweaty palms, weakness, nausea, bowel hurry with diarrhoea and abdominal colic, insomnia, fatigue, headache and loss of appetite. There is also a narrowing of attention span and reduced mental efficiency with disorganisation and poor performance.
Tranquillizers are often prescribed to individuals who have high levels of anxiety and although this maybe a short term fix, the sufferer after time can in turn become dependant upon them without understanding why they become anxious or how to better cope with it.
